I. Early Years
A. He was born in 551 BCE in Lu, China.
B. Kongfuzi is his real name but was called Confucius by westerners.
C. His family experienced a lot of the chaos of lords fighting for power.
II. Significant Events
A. Civil servants were hired based on ability and wisdom instead of automatically being appointed
because they were a relative.
B. Chinese scholar society was shaped by Confucianism and imperial universities were started to
create learning environments.
III. Personal Attributes
A. He was a teacher of good character.
B. He deeply respected Chinese tradition and ancestor worship.
C. Confucius was a believer of establishing an honest and fair government.
IV. Contributions
A. Because he attracted so many students, they were able to spread his teachings of kindness, loyalty,
and unselfishness.
B. His philosophy was that in society everyone has a role. Elders and authority should be respected
and in return they should set good examples to those below them.
C. He contributed the foundation of Confucianism for Chinese culture and government.
V. My Impressions
A. I admire that Confucius developed a new moral outlook to solve problems.
B. I like how he taught that family was important and that respecting your ancestors promoted family
loyalties.
